Motorola has some big plans for the Droid X. They created a new monster with this model and completely outflanked their competition. No doubt this will be one of your favorite smartphones for the coming year. Look what it can do right here.

Who would have thought the next Droid would be this extravagant ? This smartphone seems to come with things straight from the top dogs at Motorola. The screen is not just big, it is BIG. Some people would call this a mini-tablet. The Droid X may not have a manual keyboard, but it really is not needed. The virtual keyboard is big enough to handle the biggest fingers and fastest typing. If the height is a bit excessive, the savvy looks make up for it. The Droid X is just .4 inch thick. That is 10.2 millimeters for those readers not in the United States. It weighs 5.47 ounces. Its competition, the iPhone 4 weighs 4.8 ounces. That is less than an ounce of difference.

The first task is getting your eyes full of the beautiful Droid X screen. It is 4.3 inches of graphic mastery. It comes with 480 by 854 pixels of resolution. Those are great numbers and soar above the average phone screen. It is a touch screen and because of its operating system, it can do the acrobatics. That is, it can automatically change the screen from portrait to landscape, it can do the popular “pinch and zoom” multi-touch action. It is not an AMOLED display, but then again, it still looks very attractive.

What can the Droid X connect to ? This smartphone connects to Wi-Fi with a special DLNA system. DLNA is the new standard created to make it easier to connect devices at home. For instance, the Droid X can connect to a Wi-Fi enabled TV ( in the future ) to show your videos. The “X” has many different versions of Bluetooth it can connect with. The 1xEV-DO rA high speed data port is there. The USB connector is included. There is a web browser that hooks up to the internet. It is the Webkit browser that has one of the best track records for mobile devices. For instant messaging, there is just one network, the Google Talk system. You may be able to find an Android app to increase that to other networks.

The nuts and bolts of this smartphone is the Android operating system. The Motorola Droid X comes with version 2.1, Eclair. Version 2.2 ( Froyo ) is already available and may be installed on the Droid X. When the unit is released presumably next month, the world will know which was installed. If yours does not come with the 2.2 version of Android it will be slower. The Android system has over 90,000 applications ( apps ) to choose from. The Droid X user will be able to save time and money and enjoy some killer games with the large screen.

The camera is fully equipped. It sports eight megapixels of resolution. It has not one but two LEDs for flash. It is one of the rare ( perhaps the only smartphone ) devices that has a mechanical shutter. It also has touch-to-focus and supports streaming video. The video quality is an impressive high-definition level of 720p. If you want to hook up the Droid X to the television just use an HDMI cable and view videos. There is no secondary camera.

The Motorola Droid X is fast and was given a large battery. Users can talk for eight hours before needing a charge. Look for this to come out next month. “Big Red”, also known as Verizon, will be the carrier of choice.
